ATHENS, MO : Iowa motorist fatally injured in one-vehicle crash in Clark County on Sunday, 24th November, 2019

An Iowa motorist was fatally injured in a one-vehicle crash at 12:56 p.m. Sunday in Clark County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said Donald J. Verkruyse, 78, of Farmington, Iowa, was driving a 2011 Buick Enclave west on Route V, 3 miles west of Mo. 81, when the SUV ran off the right side of the road, hit a fence and overturned.

Verkruyse, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle. He was initially taken by ambulance to Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill., and was later transferred to the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, where he was pronounced dead at 10:34 p.m. Sunday.

The crash took place near the Iowa-Missouri border about 9 miles west of Athens. Assisting at the scene were the Clark County Sheriff's Department, the Clark County Ambulance Service and the Clark County Fire and Rescue.
