Knoxville, TN : Two dead after police chase ends in crash on Clinton Highway on Friday, 30th September 2016
Two people were killed and four were injured in a four-vehicle crash Friday on Clinton Highway that began with a police chase in Knox County.
The crash temporarily shut down the highway near the Knox-Anderson county line, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
A Knox County Sheriff's Office deputy was attempting a traffic stop on a 2001 Ford Taurus when the vehicle sped away around 11:30 a.m., according to a THP incident report.
The driver, Roy Simmons, 29, of Helen, Ga., was in the northbound lane near West Beaver Creek Road when the Taurus veered left into oncoming traffic in the southbound lane, according to the report.
The Taurus struck a 2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by Holly Henry, 44, of Oak Ridge and ran the Eclipse off the road. Henry, who wore a seatbelt, was uninjured.
After the first crash, Simmons' vehicle struck a 2008 Toyota 4Runner driven by Misty Tanner, 33, of Knoxville in a head-on collision, according to the report. Tanner was injured, as were her two passengers, Caprice McElmore, 56, of Clinton, and McKinley Tanner, 2, of Knoxville, who was in a car seat. Tanner and McElmore wore seat belts.
A 2015 Mercedes GL driven by Nancy Donsbach, 61, of Knoxville, rear-ended Tanner's 4Runner, which sent the 4Runner and the Taurus spinning in the roadway, according to the report. The Mercedes also ran off the road. Donsbach, who was injured, wore a seat belt.
While the two vehicles were spinning, according to the report, the 4Runner hit the passenger side of the Taurus and crushed it into the driver's side. Simmons and his passenger, Charles Miller, 25, of Powell, both died in the crash. Neither wore a seat belt.
The report doesn't identify the KCSO deputy who tried to stop Simmons or describe the nature of the attempted traffic stop.
