Texarkana, TX : Driver identified in fatal crash involving stolen vehicle on Tuesday, 20th September 2016
The driver killed Tuesday night in a single-vehicle crash has been identified as Billy Morehead, 36, of Texarkana, Texas. An unidentified female passenger also died in the crash, which involved a stolen vehicle, according to police.
At 9:10 p.m. Tuesday, patrol officers responded to a report of a major vehicle accident on South Lake Drive at the Waggoner Creek bridge, just south of Caddo Street, said Shawn Vaughn, Texas-side police spokesman. When officers arrived, they discovered a 1992 Buick LaSabre engulfed in flames.
The vehicle was stolen minutes before from Rock House Liquor Store in the 400 block of North State Line Avenue in Texarkana, Ark.
According to witnesses of the crash, the vehicle was traveling south on Lake Drive at a very high rate of speed when it failed to negotiate the curve. Investigators believe the vehicle to have been traveling 90-100 mph at the time of the crash.
After leaving the roadway, the vehicle struck the concrete bridge abutment and went airborne for about 30 feet before striking a tree. It came to rest on its side in the creek bed and immediately burst into flames. It is believed that both occupants were likely killed on impact, police said.
The bodies were taken to Southwest Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas for autopsies, and investigators continue to examine the crash and work to identify the female passenger, officials said.
South Lake Drive between Caddo Street and Buchanan Road was closed to north- and southbound traffic for about five hours Tuesday night while investigators and crime scene technicians were on scene.
