Dutchtown, LA : Two children killed in Ascension Parish accident on Tuesday, June 24, 2014
Two young children were killed and three adults injured Tuesday after a sport utility vehicle went off a road and crashed into a group of people fishing in a roadside bayou.
The SUV was headed south on Bluff Road, south of Interstate 10 in Ascension Parish, at about 3:30 p.m., when it ran off the road into the fishing group, said Trooper 1st Class Jared Sandifer.
The vicitms were identified as 6-year-old David Lanus Jr. and his 9-year-old sister, Faria Lanus, both of Geismar. They were pronounced dead at the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner's Office.
The three adults, including the children's father, 30-year-old David Lanus Sr., suffered moderate injuries and were taken to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The driver of the SUV, Shawnette B. Taylor, 47, of Prairieville, was properly restrained at the time of the crash, and she suffered only minor injuries as a result, state police said.
Based on an initial investigation, troopers suspect the SUV veered off the road and into an embankment before sliding roughly 100 feet and striking the fishing party, police said. Driver impairment does not appear to be a factor in the crash, police said.
"We're still trying to figure out exactly what happened," Sandifer said.
No charges have been filed.
Wiley said people regularly fish the area of the bayou where the crash occurred, which is situated in a "significant curve" on Bluff Road where the bayou crosses under it through a culvert.
The road runs along the eastern edge of the large Bluff Swamp and the Spanish Lake Basin and is mostly wooded along the western side.
