San Mateo, CA : Corrections captain killed in crash on Thursday, 8th April 2021

A corrections captain with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office was killed in a crash early Thursday morning in San Mateo.

The crash involved a motorcycle driven by Capt. Mark Elam and a Palatka Daily News delivery van.

The sheriff's office said Elam was traveling to work when he was involved in the crash before 6 a.m. The crash happened on U.S. 17 and North Boundary Road, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

Elam was transported to Putnam County Medical Center, where he died from his injuries, according to the sheriff's office.

Following Elam's death, members of the sheriff's office and the Palatka Police Department escorted his body to the St. Johns County line, with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office leading the escort to the medical examiner's office in St. Augustine.

His body was escorted back to Putnam County to Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka on Thursday afternoon.

Elam was an 18-year employee with the sheriff's office, serving in the Putnam County Jail.
