Bay Point, CA : Pedestrian struck and killed by a vehicle near Loftus Road and Schooner Way on Tuesday, April 21, 2015

A pedestrian died Tuesday afternoon after he was struck by a motorist who may have been distracted by a woman attending to a child in the back seat of his car, according to the Highway Patrol.

The collision on Canal Road near Loftus Road occurred just north of Highway 4 in unincorporated Contra Costa County at about 3:10 p.m., CHP Officer John Fransen said.

The unidentified male was walking on the shoulder of Canal Road, as the driver of a Honda Civic turned onto Canal from Loftus, Fransen said.

The driver, possibly distracted by his passengers, left the roadway and struck the pedestrian walking on the gravel shoulder, Fransen said. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities after the crash.

The pedestrian was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek with serious injures. He died at the hospital about one hour later, authorities said.

The CHP is investigating whether the driver of the Honda Civic was distracted before the collision. In the moments before the crash, a female passenger got out of her seat to tend to a child in the back seat, possibly distracting the male driver and causing him to drive off the roadway, authorities said.

One witness told CHP the driver was not speeding. It does not appear alcohol or drugs were a factor, authorities said.
