Authorities are investigating an accident that resulted in the death of a 27-year-old Apopka man Wednesday. The victim has been identified as Donovan Thorney of Apopka.According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Thorney had parked a pickup truck with a trailer in the driveway of a home justwest of Winter Garden and south of State Road 50, near the border of Lake and Orange counties.
When Thorney detached the trailer, he noticed the vehicle began rolling down the driveway. Officials said the vehicle wasnot in park and the emergency brake was not activated.
Authorities said the victim tried to stop the pickup by climbing onto the running board adjacent to the driver's door. But before he could open the door, he struck a telephone pole, ending up wedged between the pole and the pickup door, according to the patrol. The vehicle continued down the driveway and went through the fence of a nearby property, officials said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
He was the best climber I've ever had. He would do anything like this, trying to stop a truck going down the driveway," said Kevin Saxton, the victim's employer.
