Topeka, KS : A juvenile bike rider was cited for failure to yield the right of way after she collided with a car in the intersection of S.E. 25th and Wisconsin on Tuesday, July 15, 2014
A girl injured when her bicycle was struck by an SUV on Tuesday afternoon will be cited on a charge of failing to stop at a stop sign, police said.
About 3:55 p.m., first responders arrived at the scene in the intersection of S.E. 25th and Wisconsin.
Topeka police Lt. John Sturgeon said the cyclist was southbound on S.E. Wisconsin when she was struck by an eastbound Ford Explorer in the middle of the intersection. Sturgeon said the Explorer had the right of way and its driver wouldn’t be cited.
When officers arrived at the scene, they spoke with the driver of the SUV, who wasn’t injured.
The cyclist was taken to a local hospital by an American Medical Response ambulance, which left the scene without lights and sirens, indicating a nonemergency situation. Although Sturgeon didn’t give the girl’s exact age, he did say she was older than 10 years of age.
Police at the scene said it wasn’t clear whether the girl was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
As of 5:20 p.m., an update on the girl’s status wasn’t available.
