Batavia, NY : Two seriously injured in motorcycle crash in Darien on Wednesday night, July 27, 2016
Two people were seriously injured after the motorcycle they were on left the road, hit a ditch and became airborne before hitting several trees off Sumner Road late Wednesday night.
The motorcycle was traveling at high speeds and was being followed by a Genesee County sheriff’s sergeant at the time after it allegedly struck two cars leaving a concert at Darien Lake.
The driver, Eric R. Brumsted, 55, of Batavia-Bethany Townline Road, Bethany was found under his motorcycle. He was unconscious.
The passenger, Andrea M. Farruggia, 43, was found about 30 feet away lying unconscious in a bed of weeds.
Both were taken by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester with serious internal injuries.
The crash happened on a curve on Sumner Road near Walker Road about five minutes after deputies were told that two cars had been hit from behind by a motorcycle on Route 77, Chief Deputy Gordon Dibble said.
Deputies were directing traffic on Sumner after a performance by Heart at Darien Lake Theme Park and were told to stop the motorcycle as it came through, Dibble said.
Brumsted failed to stop and continued along Sumner Road. Sgt. Gregory Walker gave chase and caught up with the motorcycle at Walker and Sumner roads.
“Sgt. Walker was a quarter of a mile back from the motorcycle just in time to see them tumbling,” Dibble says.
Walker could not immediately find the riders of the bike as it was wrapped in weeds, Dibble said.
Alcohol and speed are believed to be factors. Charges are pending against Brumsted.
