A man is dead after being hit by a car on Old Hickory Boulevard in Hermitage on Tuesday night.
Police said the owner of an SUV noticed someone had been rummaging through his vehicle in a parking lot on the 5000 block.
The SUV owner, identified as Albert Palmer III, said he saw a man pulling on the door handle of a nearby car.
Palmer said the man, identified as 44-year-old Corbin Hullinger, started asking him, "Where's Silas?"
Palmer told police he closed his door, turned on the music and drove away, completely unaware Hullinger had grabbed onto his luggage rack and was hanging onto the vehicle.
Hullinger, reportedly rode on the SUV for about half a mile before he lost his grip and fell into the road, according to police.
Police said the first two cars behind the SUV swerved to miss him, but a third driver struck him.
The driver told police she couldn't avoid hitting Hullinger after the two cars in front of her swerved.
Hullinger was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he eventually died. His name has not been released by officials.
Police said there was no evidence at the scene that drugs or alcohol were involved.
No charges have been filed against any of the drivers.
