Greeley, CO : One dead, three injured in I-76 rollover crash in Weld County on Monday September 5 2016
A rollover car crash Monday afternoon left one person dead and three more injured near mile marker 38 on Interstate 76.
Victoria Lopez, 25, of Thornton, was driving west on I-76, about a mile east of the Keenesburg exit, with Jared Carlson, 27, also of Thornton, and two children — a 5-year-old girl and a 1-year-old boy — as passengers, just before 5 p.m. Monday afternoon. The rear left tire of their 2001 Kia Sportage ruptured, causing the car to swerve into the highway’s center median. The car began to roll, coming to rest on its wheels in highway’s median, according to the Colorado State Patrol Trooper Nate Reid.
Carlson was pronounced dead on scene. Lopez was transported to Denver Health Medical Center by air, with serious injuries. The 5-year-old girl sustained serious injuries as well, although the 1-year-old boy’s injuries were minor. Both were seated in child seats in the car. They were both transported to Denver Health Medical Center.
No other vehicles were involved and troopers say they do not suspect alcohol or drugs as contributing factors.
Lopez is currently in critical condition, according to Denver Health Medical Center spokeswoman Kelli Christensen.
Carlson is the 35th person to die so far this year on Weld County roads. Through this date last year, 44 people had died.
