Washington State Patrol says a 28-year-old man from White Swan died early Saturday morning after the car he was riding in crashed through a fence near Wapato.
It happened just after 5 a.m. in the 100 block of East Progressive Road. Troopers say the car was traveling south on McKinley Road when it left the roadway, went through the fence and came to rest in a field.
WSP say Daniel Fairbanks died at the scene. The driver, a 32-year-old Selah man, and two other passengers, both men from Wapato, were not seriously injured.
According to the Yakima County Sheriff's Office, the three men fled the scene after the crash. Deputies say they found the driver hiding in the tall grass on Progressive Road and the other two passengers a mile away on McKinley.
YCSO says alcohol is believed to have played a role in the crash.
