Columbus, OH : Two tractor trailers wreck on Tuesday, October, 17th 2017

Two tractor trailers wrecked overnight on Interstate 40 in Dickson County, causing a large trailer fire and the closure of the westbound lanes for several hours, according to officials.

The wreck occurred at 11:35 p.m. Tuesday at mile marker 170. Both westbound lanes are now open in the area after traffic was moving in one lane starting at about 5 a.m.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol report, Mohamadou Sy, 43, of Canal Winchester, Ohio, was driving a 2007 Freightliner tractor trailer in the right lane on I-40 westbound when the vehicle struck the rear of the 2017 International tractor trailer driven by Kurt Bryan Hamilton, 54, of El Paso, Texas.

The truck driven by Sy traveled off the right side of the interstate, overturned and caught fire. The truck driven by Hamilton came to a rest on the right shoulder and the rear of the vehicle caught fire.

Both men were injured, according to the THP report. No other information about their injuries is available at this time.

The trailer that was engulfed in flames was carrying four different types of medications, in plastic containers.

The first responder agencies that knocked down the fire and organized traffic at the scene included: Dickson County Fire & Rescue, Tennessee City Volunteer Fire Department, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Dickson County Emergency Management Agency, the Dickson Fire Department, and Harpeth Towing.

Fire & Rescue Chief Hawk Wingate said "pretty much the entire station" was at the scene. The all-volunteer organization worked from about midnight to 8 a.m. this morning. A nearby resident created a berm with in the ditch alongside the interstate to control the fire and help mitigate any environmental runoff. The rescue squad brought its new rescue vehicle, which has a large light tower and carries extraction equipment and foam. The foam was used to control the fire Wednesday morning, Wingate said. The squad also deployed two brush trucks and an engine tanker at the scene.
