Three-vehicle accident Tuesday morning that killed a Columbia man

Investigators spent hours attempting to reconstruct a three-vehicle accident Tuesday morning that killed a Columbia man waiting to turn off of Bear Creek Pike.

Police Sgt. Thomas Ehret declined to release the name of the victim pending notification of his next of kin, but he said one of the drivers involved in the incident was ticketed for failure to exercise due care.

The accident occurred Tuesday morning in the 100 block of Bear Creek Pike. The victim was driving a yellow, Chevrolet compact car and was legally in the roadway preparing to turn left into a Dollar General store parking lot when his vehicle was struck from behind by a pickup truck, Ehret said.

The impact forced the car into eastbound traffic where it was struck in the side by another pickup truck and pushed into a ditch, he said. The victim suffered severe head injuries and emergency personnel administered CPR at the scene.

The male driver of the pickup who struck the car first was cited. No one else was injured in the accident. Ehret said the Tennessee Highway Patrol is assisting Columbia police in reconstructing the accident scene for further investigation.
