Chico, CA : A woman died in a single-vehicle crash at Highway 32 On Friday, July 22nd, 2016

A woman died Friday in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 32 near Chico, officers said.

The crash happened about 2:30 p.m. The driver of a maroon GMC Envoy was eastbound on Highway 32, west of Meridian Road, about 55-60 mph when the SUV’s left rear tire blew out, said Geoff Dey, an officer for the

California Highway Patrol.

The blow-out caused the SUV to fishtail, Dey said, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

The SUV then drifted off the highway and crashed into a drainage ditch near an orchard south of the roadway, he said. The Chevrolet came to a rest on its passenger side.

There were four people in the SUV, Dey said. A woman passenger died at the scene. A man and a second woman suffered moderate to major injuries. And a male youth suffered minor to moderate injuries.

The officer said the man claimed he was driving.

The names and ages of the occupants were not immediately available.

Dey said alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the wreck.

Eastbound and westbound traffic was controlled for a time as officers and emergency vehicles responded to the scene.

The crash remained under investigation.
