LINCOLN, NE : Police say 2 dead in fiery overnight Nebraska crash on Thursday, 5th November, 2020

Two people died in a fiery crash early Thursday on a Lincoln street, police said.

The wreck happened just before 2 a.m. along South 27th Street when a car went out of control and crashed into a tree, the Lincoln Journal Star reported. A police spokeswoman, Officer Erin Spilker, said two officers who arrived on the scene shortly after the crash tried to pull the people from the car, but the flames forced the officers back. The officers were later treated for injuries, including cuts to their hands, they received during their efforts, Spilker said.

Residents in the neighborhood and a passerby used garden hoses and a fire extinguisher until firefighters arrived to douse the flames, Spilker said, but the victims had already died by the time first responders could get into the crashed car.

Police did not immediately release the names of the two people killed.

Spilker said video obtained in the neighborhood showed the car had been traveling south at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control.
