A chase through western Jefferson County today ended when the fleeing suspects crashed into an SUV carrying a mother and her two children.
The suspects were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The family members in the SUV hit by them weren't injured.
It all began just after noon on Bessemer Super Highway when Jefferson County sheriff's deputies tried to pull over a Toyota Camry that had been reported stolen out of Birmingham, said Chief Deputy Randy Christian. The driver refused to stop, and led deputies on a chase into the Lake View community in Tuscaloosa County.
The chase traveled along Bessemer Super Highway to Old Tuscaloosa Highway and on to Alabama Highway 216. Shortly after crossing Interstate 59/20, the suspect's vehicle hit another car in the rear, Christian said.
Deputies surrounded the vehicle and took the 37-year-old driver into custody. Both the driver and his 25-year-old female passenger suffered minor injuries and were transported to the hospital. The occupants in the other vehicle were not injured, Christian said.
Authorities are withholding the suspects' names pending formal charges.
