Just before midnight Friday, Ashley Hansen, 18, of Roosevelt, was driving a Buick traveling east on U.S. 40 about 8 miles west of Duchesne when she drifted into the oncoming lane for unknown reasons, troopers said.
The Buick collided head-on with a double tanker truck carrying crude oil and traveling west, troopers said.
The truck caught fire, but the crude oil was not compromised. The truck's cab was destroyed by the fire, but the driver was able to escape and was treated for minor injuries, according to UHP.
Hansen died on scene.Scott Forsyth, Duchesne County School District student services director, said he contacted Union High School's principal and counselors Saturday morning.
We will meet with staff Monday morning, and yes, there will be extra counselors on hand throughout the week to support both students and members as needed," Forsyth said.
Hansen's family has started a GoFundMe.com account to help with funeral expenses.
She was a very ambitious and amazing girl," her sister, Kayla Hansen, wrote on the GoFundMe.com page.
Hansen was the No. 1 singles player and team captain of Union High's tennis team. Her teammates and coaches gathered at the school's tennis courts Saturday afternoon to decorate the court fence in her honor.
