King County, WA : 53-year-old Maple Valley man killed, 1 arrested after head-on crash in Issaquah area Tuesday morning, June 7, 2016

A 53-year-old Maple Valley man was killed Tuesday morning near Issaquah after his vehicle was hit head-on by a car that sheriff’s deputies had been chasing. The suspect, 27, who was driving with an infant, had minor injuries and was arrested.

Authorities have booked the man into the Regional Justice Center in Kent for investigation of vehicular homicide, jail records show.

The incident began about 5:40 a.m., when a King County sheriff’s deputy saw a black Kia driving fast and erratically on Highway 18, said a King County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

After attempts to make a traffic stop failed, the deputy broke off pursuit as the suspect’s car exited the highway.

Minutes later, sheriff’s deputies who had been called to join the chase came upon the crash south of Highway 18 at Issaquah-Hobart Road, officials said.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect’s Kia was northbound when it crossed the dividing line and struck a southbound vehicle head-on, officials said.

Emergency medical personnel pronounced the victim dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released.

Sheriff’s deputies found the suspect and an infant child inside the Kia after the crash. Burke said the suspect was shocked with a Taser after he resisted deputies’ attempts to take him into custody.

The suspect was arrested and taken to Valley Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries sustained in the crash, officials said. The infant, who also has not yet been identified, was taken to Valley Medical Center for observation.

The man underwent a blood-alcohol test to determine if he was intoxicated, officials said. The results are forthcoming.
