Lakeland, GA : Ray City residents killed in car wreck in Lanier County on Monday night, November 14, 2016
Two people died during a weekend car wreck, according to a report released late Monday night by the Georgia State Patrol.
Linda Gale Gillis, 70, of Ray City and Jean Bavender Remington, 68, of Ray City were killed in the wreck, according to the GSP Post 31 statement.
They were in separate vehicles.
Both were declared dead at the accident scene on Ga. 125, about a tenth of a mile south of Palmetto Pines Lane in Lanier County, said GSP Cpl. Chris Kelch.
Gillis was driving a 2002 Dodge Dakota south on Ga. 125. Remington was driving a 2006 Ford Mustang north on Ga. 125.
At approximately 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, the Dakota reportedly crossed the center line into the northbound lane, according to the GSP report. The Dakota struck the front end of the Mustang.
"After impact, the Dakota rotated counter-clockwise continuing southbound and came to a final rest in the southbound lane of Ga. 125 facing east," according to the GSP report. "The Mustang traveled backwards, southbound on Ga. 125 and came to a final rest on the east shoulder of Ga. 125 facing north."
A juvenile was a passenger in the Dakota; she was taken by Berrien County EMS ambulance to South Georgia Medical Center. She sustained injuries to her lower extremities, according to the GSP report.
Gillis was unrestrained at the time of the collision, according to the GSP investigation. Remington and the juvenile passenger wore seatbelts. Airbags deployed in both vehicles.
"Troopers suspect that the Dakota did not have its headlights on at the time of the collision and may have been a contributing factor in this crash," according to the GSP report.
Troopers do not suspect alcohol or drugs as a contributing factor.
No charges will be filed.
