Tampa, FL : RICO ANTWAN JONES DROVE HIS CAR INTO RETIREMENT HOME on early Tuesday morning August 12th 2014
A possibly impaired driver slammed into a retirement home downtown Tampa early Tuesday morning. TPD officers estimated the car went 30 feet into the building.
According to the police report, a DUI unit tried to pull over Rico Antwan Jones, driving a later model Mustang, going fast through downtown Tampa. But the DUI officer decided to terminate the traffic stop because the driver didn't meet the criteria for the pursuit, the police report stated.
The car drove away and some time later the driver plowed into a retirement home on Platt Street and Hyde Park Avenue.
"I woke up and smelled smoke and thought maybe it was something in my apartment," resident Evelyn Lopez said. "I came out in the hallway and the hall was full of smoke and I started banging on my neighbors' doors."
Officers said the driver may have been impaired. He got out of the Mustang and tried to walk away. Eventually, he went to the hospital with minor injuries. No one in the apartment complex was hurt but resident were frightened.
"We kept smelling smoke and our hallway was full of smoke," Sylvia Hatfield said. "I didn't know what happened."
The driver, Rico Antwan Jones, a.k.a. Diamond, 28, of Clearwater has a long criminal history in Hillsborough County. His previous charges include offering to commit prostitution and contributing to delinquency or dependency.
Police considered evacuating the building because of the damage done by the vehicle but decided the residents were okay. Detectives continue to investigate.
