A River Falls teen died last night after a fiery crash in the western Wisconsin town of Clifton.
Tyler James Orpen, 16, was pronounced dead at River Falls Area Hospital after being taken there by ambulance. He is the son of December and Shawn Orpen of River Falls.
A 61-year-old St. Paul Park man, Joseph Martin Timmers, was transported to Regions Hospital in St. Paul with undisclosed injuries. He was listed in critical condition Wednesday, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies were notified of a two-vehicle crash in front of W10417 County Road FF at about 5:37 p.m. Tuesday.
Orpen was traveling eastbound on County Road FF east of 1015th Street in a 2001 Ford Focus when he struck the gravel shoulder, over-corrected and entered the westbound lane, police said.
Timmers was heading westbound on County Road FF in a 2011 Ram truck at that time. He attempted to swerve away from Orpen’s vehicle, but the two vehicles collided in the north ditch and landed in a corn field, where they started on fire.
Witnesses pulled Orpen from his vehicle, but he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Timmers was able to get out of his vehicle on his own.
Pierce County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by River Falls Police, River Falls Fire and River Falls Ambulance.
The crash remains under investigation.
