Shippingport , PA : Flash freeze led to fatal crash at Shippingport Bridge over the Ohio River in Beaver County on Wednesday morning , February 11th 2015
Shippingport, Pennsylvania
A fatal car crash closed the Shippingport Bridge over the Ohio River in Beaver County on Wednesday morning.
Icy conditions were reported when the crash happened at about 7 a.m.
Steam from the Beaver Valley Power Station caused a flash freeze on the bridge, according to Shippingport Assistant Fire Chief Mike Kilcoyne.
"It's common because of the stacks. You can see they make moisture, and it's cold out, and it's a bridge," Kilcoyne said.
"When we do get that, we call the state, who's in charge of the bridge, and they take care of that. They salt it or ash it," Shippingport Police Chief Robert Davis said.
Davis estimated that the typical response time for such a call is only about "five or 10 minutes."
The person who died has not been identified yet.
