Hanover, IN : A fiery New Year’s Day crash on west State Road 56 between Hanover and Blocher on Wednesday, 1st January, 2020
A Mississippi man died in a fiery New Year’s Day crash involving a pickup truck pulling a trailer on west State Road 56 between Hanover and Blocher.
Jerry L. Monday, 62, of Yazoo City, Mississippi, was partially ejected and trapped under the truck. Fuel leaking from the vehicle ignited and engulfed the 1999 Ford F-250 and Monday was pronounced dead at the accident scene by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
Jefferson County Central Dispatch received a report of the single vehicle accident at 11:10 p.m. Wednesday in the 11000 block of West State Road 56, Lexington. Jefferson County Sheriff Deputies responded to the accident scene, assisted by the Kent and Hanover fire departments, the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office and Indiana State Police.
An investigation into the crash indicated that Monday’s vehicle was traveling east on State Road 56 when, for an undetermined reason, the vehicle crossed left of center of the roadway and left the roadway, said a statement released by JCSO. The vehicle came to rest on the passenger side of the truck with the trailer that was being towed inverted.
Firefighters from Kent were initially dispatched with Hanover dispatched soon after since the driver needed to be extricated from the wreckage. However, the driver died from his injuries prior to the arrival of either fire department.
While Monday’s address is listed as Yazoo City, he was believed to have been working in the area for some time prior to the crash, the sheriff’s office said.
