Gadsden, AL : One killed, another injured in fiery, head-on crash on I-759 on Friday, June 24, 2016

One driver died and another sustained serious injuries Friday when an 18-wheeler crossed the median on Interstate 759 west of the Rainbow Drive exit and hit another head-on.

Gadsden Fire Chief Stephen Carroll said call came in at 5:01 a.m. and the fire department was on the scene at 5:08 a.m. He said it probably took about an hour to get the fire under control; a couple of hours later, he said there could still be some hot spots inside the wreckage.

One of the trucks was loaded with cotton, the other apparently carried some kind of cloth. That trailer was consumed by the fire, with only its frame remaining.

The truck heading westbound had crossed the bridge just past the entrance ramp near the Gadsden Mall when it apparently crossed the median and collided with the 18-wheeler, traveling east.

Police continue to investigate the crash. Gadsden Police Sgt. John Hallman said the wreck effectively has the eastbound lanes of 759 blocked, and they may remain blocked for much of the day. According to the ALDOT road closure information on the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency website, I-759 northbound in Etowah County is closed from I-59 to U.S. Highway 411.
