Corydon,IN :20- Years old Miss Crawford County Sutherland killed after single-car accident on Early Saturday morning ,August 1st 2015
All day Monday, friends and family attended the visitation of Abby Sutherland.
Officials confirmed Sutherland, 20, was involved in a single-car accident on Tree Drive west of Palmyra at 12:30 a.m. Saturday.
The car she was riding in was going west on Tree Drive when it came over a hill, went off the road, hit several trees and rolled, the Harrison County Sheriff's Office said.
Sutherland was trapped inside the car. When emergency crews pulled her out, medical personnel pronounced her dead at the scene.
A crown and a cross now mark the spot where Sutherland lost her life early Saturday morning.
"She loved everything about life, had so much to give, so much left ahead of her, she was amazing," friend Tigre Flannery said.
Sutherland was just crowned Miss Crawford County in July. Friends said she was thrilled to represent her community at the Indiana State Fair in a couple of weeks.
"She was just so excited when she won," The Overlook Restaurant General Manager Katherine Morris said. "It was such a big deal."
"It was amazing, the shock on her face was priceless," Flannery said. "She earned it, she deserved it more than anyone I know."
Friends described Sutherland as hardworking. She held two jobs, one at local car dealership and she worked as hostess at The Overlook Restaurant in Leavenworth. Her bosses say they have watched her grow up.
"She would do anything, she was just a ray of sun," restaurant owner Karen Haverstock. "That was Abby."
The restaurant will close on Tuesday so employees can attend the funeral.
"If everybody acted the way she did about every person, it would be a pretty good world because she never looked down on anybody and she was always giving," Haverstock said.
Flannery thought of Sutherland as a little sister. She said Sutherland was out on a date Friday night before the accident on Tree Drive in Harrison County.
"I heard that they were friends and they had a good time and had been to dinner and were trying to get to know each other," Flannery said.
While her life was cut short, friends said it's her smile and positive attitude that will live on.
"I don't think there was anybody that didn't love her," Flannery said.
Miss Crawford County pageant Director Ashley Bullington released the following statement:
“There are no words that can express our sadness. Once you met Abby you felt as if you had just met a friend for life. Abby was a beautiful girl inside and out, with a kind soul and mega watt smile. Abby's Miss Crawford County family is heartbroken over the loss of our dear friend.”
Investigators believe speed is likely a factor and they awaiting the results of a toxicology tests.
The driver of the vehicle was flown to University Hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown.
Sutherland will be laid to rest on Tuesday in Corydon.
