A pedestrian has died after being struck by a car on the highway in Franklin.

Massachusetts state police say it happened at about 12:20 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 495, north of exit 17.

A preliminary investigation indicates the pedestrian was in the middle travel lane when he was struck. It's unclear why he was in the roadway.

The pedestrian, identified as 41-year-old Anthony Santucci, of Franklin, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The operator of the vehicle, a 32-year-old woman from Cumberland, Rhode Island, stayed at the scene of the crash.

No charges have been filed.

The crash remains under investigation.
