Pennsauken, N.J : Tanker truck carrying fuel burst into flames along the Route 90 on-ramp to U.S. Route 130 in Pennsauken on Monday, February 23, 2015
A tanker truck carrying 34,000 litres of fuel has caught fire on a major highway in southern New Jersey, spewing thick, black smoke into the sky.
Authorities said the driver managed to get out of the vehicle. He and a firefighter were both admitted to a hospital with undisclosed injuries. Officials said both were in stable condition.
The fire broke out shortly after 11am, (5am today, NZ time) when the truck overturned on the Route 90 on-ramp to Route 130 in Pennsauken, authorities said. It wasn't clear what caused the truck to overturn.
Firefighters began dousing the truck with foam around noon. The blaze appeared to be out 10 minutes later but then reignited. Firefighters had it mostly under control again by 12.20pm (6.20am).
The smoke could be seen eight kilometres away, in downtown Philadelphia.
The Delaware River Port Authority, which oversees the on-ramp, is investigating.
