PLANT CITY, FL : Woman, 80, dies after being ejected from vehicle in I-4 crash on Tuesday, 20th March 2018
An elderly woman was fatally injured Tuesday after a crash caused her to be thrown from a vehicle, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash took place at about 3:30 a.m. and closed the left inside laves of Interstate 4 for several hours, said Sgt. Steve Gaskins.
Three people were taken to hospitals. Gertrude Minneman, 80, of Perryville Maryland, died at South Florida Baptist Hospital in Plant City, the FHP said. She was not wearing her seat belt, a report said.
The driver Thomas Stedem, 57, and another passenger, Marvin Minneman, 80, were taken to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center.
The three were traveling east in a 2015 Ford Escape on I-4 early Tuesday, according to an accident report.
They passed the Alexander Street exit when a 2017 Ford F-350 pickup truck crashed into their rear-end, the report said. The SUV crashed into the left side of another vehicle and then overturned, throwing the 80-year-old woman from the vehicle, according to the report.
The truck’s driven, William Grimer Jr., 51, of Plant City, was not taken to a hospital. Alcohol did not appear to be a factor, the FHP said, and charges could be pending in this case.
