Little Rock, AR : 2-year-old killed and his mother injured in Hit-and-run accident south of Benton on Sunday, July 10, 2016

A 2-year-old was killed and his mother was hospitalized Sunday after a pickup truck veered off the highway south of Benton, hit them and drove off.

Around 3:30 a.m., a woman was pulling her son in a wagon along Arkansas 190. They were near a curve in the road when a passing driver lost control of a pickup truck, according to Arkansas State Police.

The truck hit the wagon, continued through a ditch and came back onto the highway before driving away, police said. The woman and her son were both taken to Saline Memorial Hospital, where the son was pronounced dead.

Authorities were withholding the name of the woman Sunday as they continued investigating, and privacy laws prevent authorities from releasing the child’s name, state police spokesman Bill Sadler said.
