Lakewood, WA : Gig Harbor man dies in pickup collided with a tanker truck Interstate 5 near Lakewood on Wednesday November 11 2015
The driver of a pickup is dead after he collided with a tanker truck Wednesday morning on southbound Interstate 5 near Lakewood, officials said.
Emergency personnel responded to the crash, near Berkeley Avenue, at about 6:40 a.m. after receiving reports of a serious collision.
They found a 2012 Chevy Silverado pickup truck and a tanker truck had collided in the southbound lanes. The impact of the crash was so forceful that it scattered debris on both sides of the freeway.
Medics immediately began performing CPR on the pickup driver, who was later identified as Jay Kirk, 65, of Gig Harbor. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The crash initially blocked two southbound lanes and one northbound lane of the freeway at the crash scene, causing lengthy backups in both directions. All lanes were reopened about four hours later, but traffic remained backed up in the southbound lanes for some time after that.
A preliminary investigation found that the pickup took the Berkeley Avenue exit off southbound I-5, then suddenly took a sharp left turn. The pickup then went down the hill and back into southbound I-5 traffic, slamming into the side of the tanker truck.
It wasn't immediately known whether the pickup driver suffered some kind of medical emergency before the crash that caused his death, or whether he was killed from the impact of the collision.
