Cumberland, RI: I-295 crash leaves one dead on Friday, July 17th 2015
An early-afternoon crash, that involved two trucks on Interstate 295 south Friday afternoon, claimed the life of a Woonsocket man.Michael F. Morin Jr., 56, of Woonsocket, was pronounced dead at the scene after the truck in which he was driving rolled over. Robert A. Choiniere, 36, of Lincoln, the driver of the other vehicle, was uninjured.Shortly before 2 p.m., the Rhode Island State Police responded to reports of a motor vehicle crash on 295 South in Cumberland. The State Police’s initial investigation revealed that a white International, three-axle commercial tow vehicle, driven by Morin, was traveling southbound in the far right travel lane prior to Leigh Road. Morin apparently attempted to pass Choiniere’s green, Ford dump truck that was towing construction equipment. As the International began to change lanes to the left, it’s right, front passenger side tire traveled onto the left rear of the trailer. This contact subsequently caused Morin to lose control of his vehicle. The International then rolled over and came to rest perpendicular to the roadway, in the center lane of travel, on its roof. Both drivers were the lone occupants of their vehicles and both were wearing the seatbelts.Due to the positioning of the International, fuel leakage and wide-spread debris field, investigating Troopers and the Cumberland Fire Department were forced to close 295 South for three hours, leaving traffic backed up beyond the Massachusetts state line.
