FREMONT, CA : Coroner identifies fatal Fremont crash victim on Monday, July 24, 2017

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s bureau identified a woman involved in a fatal crash Monday that closed lanes of Highway 84 for hours.

Frances Pagliocca, 59, of Pleasanton was pronounced dead at the scene of a rollover collision in Niles Canyon west of Palomares Road, a sheriff’s deputy said Tuesday. Although an investigation by Fremont police continues, officers were able to interview witnesses and the driver and passenger of another vehicle struck by Pagliocca’s car moments before her crash at about 12:30 p.m.

Pagliocca was driving eastbound in Niles Canyon and tailgating a vehicle in front of her. When she weaved within the lane and tried to pass the vehicle, she rear-ended it. Its driver lost control, and the vehicle went down an embankment but came to rest just short of Alameda Creek’s waters. The driver and passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Pagliocca’s car continued eastbound without stopping, then passed under a train bridge. Her car swerved into westbound lanes and swerved again to avoid an oncoming westbound motorist and went up a rock wall embankment, flipping over and landing on its roof.

Fremont police closed Niles Canyon between Mission Boulevard and Interstate 680 to let investigators process the scene. The roadway reopened at 7 p.m., police said.
