Phoenix, AZ : Man killed in crash with garbage truck on SR 87 near Coolidge on Thursday morning, July 28, 2016

A man died when his car crashed into a garbage truck in an accident that closed State Route 87 near Coolidge for hours Thursday morning, officials said.

The crash occurred about 3:45 a.m., said Quentin Mehr, Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman. Mehr said the accident was near the junction of SR 87 and State Route 287 south of Coolidge.

He said the motorist going east did not stop at a posted stop sign and entered the intersection in front of the garbage truck, which was traveling south. The truck struck the car on its passenger side, causing it to go off the road.

Mehr said the driver died at the scene, and a passenger in the car was airlifted to Chandler Regional Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the garbage truck was uninjured, Mehr said. Impairment was not suspected as a factor in the wreck, he said.

By 8 a.m., Mehr said, just one northbound lane remained closed.

Garin Groff, Arizona Department of Transportation spokesman, said drivers were being directed to local roads to avoid the crash, which occurred about five miles south of Coolidge, he said.

Motorists also can take Interstate 10 to avoid backups, Goff said.
