Detroit, MI : A fiery traffic crash involving a semi truck on Monday, June 12, 2017
A fiery traffic crash involving a semi truck closed a stretch of I-696 near Woodward Monday afternoon and damaged part of the freeway.
The crash happened just before 2 p.m. and appeared to involve a tractor-trailer and two other vehicles. Flames shot 100 feet in the sky, emitting intense heat amid large plumes of billowing black smoke.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities.
The accident took place near the Woodward exit on the westbound side of I-696. Both sides of the freeway were temporarily closed; eastbound traffic reopened by 2:30 p.m.
By 6:30 p.m., the westbound lanes had reopened, except for the far left lane, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
MDOT's Metro Detroit Twitter account tweeted a photo of the charred wall near where the crash occurred Monday evening and noted that repairs will be needed.
