Martinsburg, W.V : Five transported to hospitals after I-81 crash on Monday morning, July 7, 2014

Five people were transported to local hospitals early Monday morning after a crash on Interstate 81.

The incident occurred at around 3:45 a.m. at northbound mile marker 273, according to Virginia State Police Sgt. F.L. Tyler.

Rebecca J. Dehaut, 50, of Marietta, Pennsylvania, was traveling northbound in a 1995 Subaru Legacy in the left lane when she went to change lanes, Tyler said.

In doing so, she moved right and collided with a 1997 Ford Explorer that was in the right lane and operated by Amanda D. Davis, 34, of Martinsburg, West Virginia.

"After the impact, the Ford Explorer went off the right side of the roadway where it hit an embankment and overturned," Tyler said.

The five occupants in the Ford Explorer were transported to local hospitals. A 55-year-old man, 17-year-old girl and 13 year-old girl were transported by ground to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital. Davis was flown to Winchester Medical Center and a 12-year-old passenger was flown to Inova Hospital.

"It doesn't appear that there was any seatbelt usage in the Explorer," Tyler said. "The three that were in the rear of the vehicle had laid the seats down and they were sleeping as they came up the road, so they were not wearing seat belts."

Dehaut and two passengers in the Subaru Legacy were not injured. They were all wearing seatbelts, according to Tyler.

Trooper H.W. Jones investigated the incident and charged Dehaut with reckless driving.

One lane was closed on I-81, Tyler said, but was reopened less than an hour after the crash and did not cause any major traffic backups.

New Market Police Department, Mount Jackson Police Departments, Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office and Mount Jackson Rescue and Fire assisted Jones at the scene.
