Fort Myers, FL : Three people injured in a Six-vehicle crash on Winkler Avenue Wednesday morning, August 17, 2016

A six-vehicle crash on Winkler Avenue near Alderman’s Walk closed a portion of the road eastbound Wednesday morning and sent three people to Lee Memorial Hospital.

The Fort Myers Police Department said there were serious injuries in the crash which involved a garbage truck, two SUVs and three cars.

Witnesses said a Lee County school bus was picking up students at The Brittany Apartments when the crash happened at the stop location. No students were hurt and the bus was not damaged in the crash.

Jim Carter said he was in his Brittany Apartments unit which overlooks the crash scene when he glanced out the window and heard the crash. "I saw a truck going at a high rate of speed," he said. "I didn't hear any brakes."

Irene Domeno, another apartment resident, said she saw firefighters and rescue personnel using the Jaws of Life to get a woman out of one of the vehicles that had been severely damaged.

"One of her arms was floppy," she said, but otherwise she looked alert and was talking.

Police said crash investigators believe the driver of the garbage truck traveling eastbound on Winkler failed to notice several vehicles stopped for a school bus. The truck struck the rear vehicle which started a chain reaction.

The truck driver was cited for careless driving. Police said the three people sent to the hospital had non-life threatening injuries.
