Decatur, AL : Two Decatur men die in Limestone crash on Saturday morning, December 31, 2016
Two Decatur men were killed this morning in a crash in Limestone County, state troopers said.
Robert Johaun Funk, 26, and Stephen Scott McIntosh, 25, died from injuries received when a car left Mooresville Road and struck a tree five miles east of Athens at 7:20 a.m., a release from troopers said.
Funk, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the 1993 Honda Prelude he was driving and was transported to an area hospital, where he later died, the release said.
McIntosh, a passenger in the Prelude, was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said. There were conflicting reports about whether McIntosh was wearing a seat belt.
Curtis Summerville, spokesman with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, said the preliminary investigation indicates speed was a factor, but the accident remains under investigation.
The crash today was the second fatal wreck in Limestone County in two days.
Michael Louis Stephenson, 45, of Athens, was killed Friday on U.S. 72 when the 2012 Ford Focus he was driving left the roadway and struck a utility pole, according to state troopers. Stephenson, who was not using a seat belt, was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash occurred at 2:30 p.m. on U.S. 72, three miles west of Athens.
Preliminary investigation indicates speed was a factor in the crash, troopers said.
