West Pensacola, FL : Driver crashes through roof of Pensacola home on Fairfield Drive near Atlas Street on Sunday, 22nd March, 2020

No one was injured when a sleeping driver's vehicle ramped off a ditch and crashed through the roof of a West Pensacola residence, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Around 5:15 a.m., Demarcus Atkins, 21, fell asleep at the wheel while negotiating a sharp curve on Fairfield Drive near Atlas Street, an FHP news release said.

Atkins' Nissan Pathfinder ran off the road and into a ditch, coming off the embankment on the other side with enough speed to go airborne. The SUV crashed into the roof of residence in the 1400 block of Atlas Street.

The homeowner was asleep in a room adjacent to where the SUV came through the roof. She was uninjured in the incident.

Atlas, who was wearing his seatbelt, was also uninjured and he was able to exit the vehicle before first responders arrived.

The crash was not alcohol-related, according to the release. Atlas was a charged with failure to maintain his lane.
