PEORIA, IL : A man was killed in a two-vehicle accident in Limestone Township on Friday, January, 26th 2018
A man was killed Friday morning in a two-vehicle accident in Limestone Township, authorities said.
The wreck happened about 7:45 a.m. on Plank Road just west of Cameron Lane. The 20-year-old driver of a maroon vehicle was eastbound when it apparently skidded on the slick pavement, according to Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood.
Witnesses told Harwood the driver lost control of his vehicle, and it went sideways. A westbound red pickup truck broadsided it.
The maroon-vehicle driver was pronounced dead at the scene about 8:45 a.m., according to Harwood.
The pickup driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria. He was conscious and talking, Harwood said.
Peoria County Sheriff Brian Asbell said the man’s injuries were not life-threatening.
Both drivers were the only occupants of their vehicles and were wearing seat belts, Harwood said.
The identity of the dead driver was being withheld pending notification of relatives. It appeared he was not from Peoria County, according to Harwood.
An autopsy was scheduled for later Friday. Preliminary indications suggest the man died of blunt-force trauma, Harwood said.
Until about 11 a.m., Plank Road between Farmington Road and Cameron Lane was closed to traffic. Debris was strewn across the roadway, also known as Illinois Route 116. Harwood and Peoria County Sheriff’s deputies were investigating.
“We’re sure that the elements are going to have a play in this,” Asbell said. “Everything is still pending, but I think the frost on the road and road conditions was the primary causation.”
