Local author and nutritionist Steve "Sproutman" Meyerowitz was killed Wednesday night in a two-car crash in Falls Village, Conn.

Meyerowitz, 65, was northbound on Route 7 on Wednesday evening when his Volkswagen Beetle collided with a southbound Nissan Titan driven by Roger St. Pierre of Torrington, according to state police in Canaan, Conn.

Both men were reportedly wearing seatbelts. Police said the airbags in both vehicles were deployed.

The accident remains under investigation.

Both men were transported to Sharon, Conn. Hospital , where Meyerowitz was pronounced dead. St. Pierre was treated for internal injuries. He was later transported to Hartford (Conn.) Hospital.

Meyerowitz was well-known for the natural food business he began in New York City in 1977. A vegan since his youth, he earned the name "Sproutman" from a New York City reporter who interviewed him at his home and was impressed by his huge array of self-cultivated sprouts and plants.

Meyerowitz told an Eagle reporter in 2007 that he gravitated toward veganism due to health issues as a young boy. He suffered from allergies that, he said, were often debilitating.

"And as I got older, they were getting worse," he said. Eventually, said Meyerowitz, he turned to veganism and discarded most of his medications. Within weeks, he said, "I began to feel better."

Meyerowitz was an enthusiastic advocate of healthy foods, but his approach was always good-humored. He did not try to preach to his customers.

"We all have different faces," he said at the time. "We all have different stomachs and, when we get up in the morning, we all put on different clothes. We should recognize that our diets should be that way, too."

Meyerowitz is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Robbins, and three children. A funeral service is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Hevreh of Southern Berkshire at 270 State Road. Burial will be in Ahavtah Shalom Cemetery on Blue Hill Road
