Tucson, AZ : Man dies after crashing into palm tree on Tucson's east side Tuesday, April 4, 2017

A man, who crashed into a palm tree on Tucson's east side Tuesday, died from his injuries at Banner-University Medical Center.

The man was identified as Ben-David Pflug, 28, said Sgt. Kimberly Bay, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman, on Wednesday.

Bay said the single-vehicle crash was reported shortly before 2:30 p.m. at 6736 E. Dorado Boulevard.

The neighborhood is north of East Speedway and east of North Wilmot Road.

Pflug was treated by Tucson Fire Department paramedics and taken to the hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries at the time, Bay said. She said Pflug died Tuesday night.

During the investigation, officers interviewed witnesses who said they observed Pflug driving a gray 2006 Scion at a high rate of speed through the neighborhood, said Bay.

The vehicle left the road and struck a large rock and a mailbox before crashing into the palm tree. Pflug was not wearing a seatbelt, Bay said.

The investigation is continuing to determine if impairment was a factor in the crash, said Bay.

Since January, there have been 17 traffic fatalities in the city, compared to eight at this time last year, according to police data.
