Holiday, FL : 18-year-old teenager injured in hit-and-run crash near the intersection of Mile Stretch Dr. and Ranchita Trail in Holiday on early Thursday morning, September 11, 2014
Authorities in Pasco County are asking for the public's help in tracking down a hit-and-run driver that struck an 18-year-old teenager early Thursday morning.
Michael Eberl suffered injuries to his head, face and left hand. He was transported to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point in Hudson where he is listed in critical condition.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol report the incident occurred just after 2 am near the intersection of Mile Stretch Dr. and Ranchita Trail in Holiday. A description of the suspect and the vehicle is not available at this time.
The driver fled the scene without OFFERING medical assistance to the injured man. Deputies with the Pasco County Sheriff's Office were the first to arrive at the scene after Eberl was found on the south grassy shoulder of Mile Stretch Dr.
Investigators originally thought he was the victim of a battery but further investigation revealed he had been struck by a moving vehicle. Surveillance video obtained from a camera in the area shows Eberl walking east when the vehicle – also heading east – struck him from behind.
Noah Ruhanen is Eberl's uncle, and says he's experienced a range of emotions since his nephew's accident. "Angry, frustrated, well, extremely angry and frustrated. I can't, I don't understand." Said Ruhanen. "Even if you're drunk or you're a drug dealer or a prostitute or whatever, why can't you be a decent human being. You know you hit the person. " He says Michael is planning on a career in the military, and Saturday was supposed to be his going away party. Instead, his family members are by his side at the hospital. Ruhanen says his nephew is not your typical teenager. "Four years ROTC, he competes in ROTC raiders.. A million friends. He volunteers at the VFW. I mean, what else can a kid do to be a good kid. You know what I mean? "
Nathan Ruhanen and Veronica Scott are Michael's parents, and have been by his side since the accident. Ruhanen says his son seems to be improving. "He's doing okay, he's listed as critical, but listed as stable. He's showing signs of improvement, he's responding to commands. " Said Ruhanen.
