Newberg, OR : 2 killed in Newberg-Dundee Bypass crash on Monday, 7th January 2019

Two tractor-trailer drivers were killed early Monday in a fiery crash on the Newberg-Dundee Bypass, troopers say.

The crash involved two commercial vehicles — one carrying molasses and another carrying poultry — and a third passenger car, according to an Oregon State Police spokesman. The collision, which injured one additional driver, happened amid reports of icy roads in Yamhill County and elsewhere across the region.

It was the first fatal crash on the bypass, which opened in January 2018. Authorities think icy conditions played a role.

The drivers of both semis died at the scene, and the passenger car driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The state police spokesman didn’t think the poultry truck was carrying any live chickens.

Flames from the crash reached 50 feet high, according to fire officials, and firefighters worked for over an hour to control the blaze.

The bypass was still closed about 10:10 a.m., according to the Oregon Department of Transportation. Workers were cleaning up spilled diesel fuel at that point.

Icy road conditions were to blame for “a number of crashes” throughout northwest Oregon on Monday morning, the Oregon Department of Transportation said.
