Fort Madison, IA : Basco, Ill. man charged after crashing vehicle on February, Sunday 4th 2018

A Basco, Ill. man left the scene of an accident Sunday night, but was later located and charged with driving under the influence and other violations.

According to the Hancock County Sheriff’s accident report, Benjamin E. Schafer, 19, crashed his vehicle at 11:28 p.m. Sunday on County Road 1000E, north of Nauvoo, Ill.

Schafer was not at the scene when deputies arrived, but was later located as he was being transported home by a family member.

Schafer was then taken back to the accident scene by a deputy and charged with DUI, failure to notify police of the accident and failing to reduce speed causing an accident.

Assisting the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office were Nauvoo Fire & Rescue units.

The vehicle sustained major damage and was towed from the scene.
