Placerville, CA : Three people injured when two vehicles and a bus crashed early Thursday morning on August 14, 2014
A suspected drunken driver is in custody Thursday morning after crashing into a school bus near Placerville, injuring five students, the California Highway Patrol said.
Officers said 24-year-old Steven Gruber is suspected of driving under the influence.
The bus was on its way to Union Mine High School with 32 students on board at about 6:30 a.m. when it crashed with two vehicles on Grizzly Flat Road in the El Dorado County community of Somerset.
CHP Officer Quinn Cuthbertson said Gruber, who was driving an SUV, hit the bus on a two-lane road.
Gruber suffered minor injuries, but was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drunken driving. He was taken to a hospital and will be booked into the El Dorado County Jail.
Two of the five students who were injured were taken to the hospital as a precaution, the El Dorado Union High School District said in a news release.
The school bus driver suffered minor injuries, but was not taken to the hospital.
Another vehicle was involved in the crash. It is unclear if the passengers in the vehicle suffered any injuries.
Parents were notified soon after the crash, the school district said.
One lane on Grizzly Flat Road remained blocked near the scene of the crash.
Some of the students were taken off and moved to another school bus.
