A pedestrian died Friday morning after being struck by a vehicle on Route 3 in Crofton, an Anne Arundel County Fire Department spokesman said.

Police identified the pedestrian as Niccolo Teobaldo Canning, 21, of Gambrills.

At around 4:10 a.m. firefighters responded to the area of Route 3 near the intersection of Crawford and Cronson Boulevards, finding a man who had been hit by a vehicle, said county fire department spokesman Capt. Russ Davies.

Witnesses reported a 2012 black Toyota Avalon was traveling north on Route 3 when it struck Canning who was standing in the road just north of Crossgate Drive, county police said.

He was later pronounced dead by firefighters and taken to the Medical Examiner's officer in Baltimore for an autopsy, police said.

The driver of the Toyota, a man in his 40s, was taken to the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center with minor injuries, he said.

Police said a preliminary investigation found the driver of the Toyota was not at fault.

"Neither speed nor alcohol appears to involved on part of the driver," police said.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
