A lawn contractor working alongside a highway was struck and killed by an 18-wheeler in the Bacliff area Tuesday morning.

According to Texas City police, Edson Alaniz Manzano, 20, was weed-eating along Highway 146 at FM 646 when the big rig veered off the road and struck him.

"He actually just drove into the ditch. It looked like he was going to make a right-hand turn," said one man who was driving directly behind the 18-wheeler.

A 55-year-old man from Kentucky was driving the empty tanker from La Porte to Texas City. Investigators said they believe he may have had a medical issue. There were no signs of intoxication.

"The first thing I thought was that he fell asleep," said Jacob Cortez, who was on his lunch break when the accident happened.

Cortez said when the driver got out of the truck, he looked stunned. However he was cooperating with paramedics and police.

The victim was employed by a landscaping company called BIO. The company did not wish to comment about the incident Tuesday afternoon.

At the time of the crash, the victim was contracting for the Texas Department of Transportation.
