El Tour de Tucson cyclist killed in car accident

A 78-year-old man struck and killed an El Tour de Tucson bicyclist Saturday.It happened at 5:22 p.m. on the Interstate 10 frontage road north of Sunset Road.The victim was John Henderson, 59, from Tucson, according to Capt. Adam Goldberg with the Northwest Fire District.Officers do not think the driver was impaired, but they are investigating the possibility, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. He was taken to the hospital as a precaution.The stretch of road had 2 lanes, with cones dividing them. Cars were supposed to drive on the left, with bikes on the right. DPS does not know where it crossed, but the car was in the right lane.The event started at 7 a.m. Most riders had already crossed the finish line. The accident happened around sunset, so it was still light outside.Organizers expected about 9,000 riders from all over the world.
