Authorities have identified the 46-year-old Taunton man killed in a crash in West Bridgewater early Wednesday morning as Dwayne Williams.
State police said Williams was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Cruz that crashed into the back of an Isuzu box truck on Route 24 south around 2:17 a.m.
A preliminary investigation showed that the box truck, driven by a 71-year-old Whitman man, began merging from the breakdown lane into the first travel lane at a slow rate of speed when the crash happened.
Police said that Williams was unable to slow down in time and collided with the truck.
He was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
